It lives behind the freezer, wrapped in an old curtain, and it weighs more than you would think.
The extra leaf. Solid oak, the color never quite matched, and it goes in twice a year, and for eleven years he has been the one who goes out to the garage in his socks on the cold concrete to get it. Twice a year, every year, until you could set a calendar by the man and his piece of wood.
He is the one everybody still speaks to. That was his job. Nobody appointed him to it, there was no vote, it just turned out that when the thing happened, and it does not matter here what the thing was, he was the only one left who was still on the phone to both halves.
So he did the obvious thing. He put the leaf in the table and he cooked for fourteen and he sat them all down in one room, and for a few years it more or less worked. People came. They were careful with each other and they passed the potatoes and nobody said the name of the thing, and by about half three there was actual laughing at the far end, and he would stand at the sink with his hands in the water and think, this is holding, I am holding this.
It cost him more than anybody knew. He learned to talk to each side about the other side in a completely flat voice. He got very good at the pause. He said the words "I really do not want to get into that" so many times that they wore smooth.
And then, of course, it came for him. It always does. Somebody decided that a man who is still speaking to them is by definition not really with us, and somebody on the other side worked out the same arithmetic in the other direction, and within about eighteen months the great peacemaker had become, quietly and without anybody being outright rude about it, slightly suspect to everyone.
The last two years the numbers came down. Then this year the messages came in, one and one and one, all perfectly polite, all with a genuinely good reason, and he did the sum standing in his kitchen with his phone in his hand.
Six. You do not need the leaf for six.
So he never went to the garage. He cooked for six and it was a nice enough day and somebody's toddler ate a candle, and afterwards he stood in the empty kitchen with the table at its ordinary length and looked at the seam down the middle of it, the one that only shows when the leaf is out.
Later that night he went into the garage anyway, in his socks, on the cold concrete.
And he stood there a long time with that piece of oak in his hands, and he knew exactly what the sensible thing was. Up in the loft. That is where things go when you have finally accepted something.
He did not put it in the loft.
He carried it back into the house and leaned it against the wall by the back door, right where a man is going to catch his shin on it every single day of his life.
You were only ever given one of the two hands
I want to say the true thing to you, and it is not the thing people usually say to peacemakers. Scripture is where it comes from and His Spirit is the one who makes it land.
They usually say: you cannot want it more than they do. And they mean it kindly, and it is a way of telling you to stop, and you have heard it enough times now that you have started to obey it, and you have started to think of your own wanting as a slightly embarrassing habit, like a grown man still keeping a piece of oak by the back door.
Here is what is actually true.
If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with all people.Romans 12:18
Read that again slowly, because Paul builds two doors into one short sentence, and he built them for you.
If it is possible. Which means, plainly, that sometimes it is not. He does not soften it or apologize for it. He simply puts it in the sentence, at the front, before he asks for anything at all, so that no one reading it two thousand years later would ever conclude that an unhealed thing is a failed person.
As far as it depends on you. Which means, just as plainly, that some of it does not depend on you. Peace is a two-handed job. You were only ever issued one hand, and that is what is written, and His Spirit is the one who holds it open.
So look at what you have actually been doing all these years. You have been holding your one hand out, faithfully, twice a year, in your socks, on cold concrete. And then you have been grading yourself on whether somebody else took it.
That is not a standard. That is a scoreboard you were never given the ball for. Scripture never kept it, and His Spirit never once read from it.
And now hear the other half, because I am not letting you swing to the other error, which is the one you were about to take.
Do not you dare decide that the wanting was naive.
On the last night He had, in the last hours before everything, Jesus prayed out loud, where His friends could hear Him do it, that they may all be one. He did not pray for a tidy separation with everyone being gracious about it. He prayed for one. It was the point, and it was the point on the worst night of His life, and He prayed it knowing exactly which of the men in that room was about to leave.
So when you want everybody in one room, you are not being sentimental. You are agreeing with the last thing He prayed before He went to the cross. That is about the closest an ordinary person gets to praying His own prayer back to Him, and it stands written, and His Spirit is the one who prays it in you.
Your wanting was never the mistake. The ledger was the mistake. You put an outcome in the column where your obedience should have been, and then you failed yourself for years on a line God never wrote. It is not in Scripture anywhere, and His Spirit never once entered it against you.
And one more thing, because it matters more than any of this and I will not leave it unsaid. If a door is not safe to open, you do not open it. Wanting is not the same as walking in. There are rooms it would do real harm to walk back into, and staying out of one of them is not the death of your hope. You can want it, name it, bless them, and never send a single message, and you have not failed at one thing today.
Keep the leaf where you can see it. That is all. Do not put it in the loft.
So take the weight off the wrong shoulder tonight, and put your hands where they can actually reach.
You are not the guarantor of anybody's reconciliation. You never were. You cannot repent on another person's behalf, you cannot want on their behalf, and every hour you have spent trying was an hour spent doing somebody else's job in a room they were not in. Scripture never assigned it to you, and His Spirit is the one who does that work.
What is yours is small and real and completely available: your half of the peace. Your side stays open. Your door is not the one that is shut. Your name is not on anybody's list of who is not speaking to whom.
And your wanting stays. Out loud, unapologized for, leaning against the wall by the back door where you will catch your shin on it, because a hope you have to be embarrassed about is a hope that is on its way to the loft.
Whatever the other side ever does, the leaf stays in this house.
Declare this over yourself
You are in Christ, and the peace you carry is not a personality trait you are trying to sustain: He is your peace, He made it Himself, and it was given to you before you ever tried to hold two halves of a family in one room. So speak to the blame, speak to the silence, and then speak to God. Scripture is what these stand on and His Spirit is the one who makes them live, and however He answers and whatever He does with the people you love, the open hand is the part in your hands and the outcome is His.
- Table, you are still my table and the leaf is still in this house. It is written that Jesus prayed out loud that they may all be one, and His Spirit is the one who keeps that wanting alive in me, so in the name of Jesus my hands stay open.
- Blame, you are not my name and you have no chair at my table. God, Scripture calls You the God of peace, and the peace I carry came from You long before it ever came from me, so I carry it today with one hand and no ledger.
- Lord, You hold the part that was never mine, and Your Spirit is the one who does the work I cannot reach. The Word of God says that as far as it depends on me I live at peace with everyone, and in the name of Jesus I am doing my one part today and leaving the silence with You.
