It was the second week and his father was clear-headed and quiet, and he asked it while Ari was doing something with the pillows.
What do I hold onto?
Not frightened. Ari has replayed the tone about four hundred times and it was not frightened. It was practical. It was the tone of a man packing for something and asking which coat.
And Ari, who reads for a living and has taught in three languages and has spent his adult life inside this material, gave him a structure.
He did it well, is the terrible part. He gave his father a way of thinking about it: the ground first, then what stands on the ground, then what a person does in the day. He used an image about a house because his father was a builder and it was a good image and he had used it before with other people and watched it help them.
It took about four minutes.
And his father said, right, and looked at the window, and then said something about the neighbor's dog.
He died eleven days later. There was time for other conversations and they had some of them and Ari does not carry regret about the whole of that fortnight. Most of it was good.
He carries those four minutes.
Because a man in a bed asked what to hold, which is a question about the hand, and got an answer about the house. He asked for something to close his fingers on and was handed a diagram.
Ari is fifty-one. He knew, before he was halfway through, that he was doing it. He watched himself building the thing out on his father's blanket and he could not find the shorter version, because he had spent thirty years going the other direction and the road only runs one way after a while.
And you may have your own four minutes. Somebody may have asked you for a hand and got a diagram, and it may have been the person you would most have wanted to give the short thing to.
The sentence names the same thing at both ends
Take this off before we go a step further, because you have carried it since that fortnight and it was never yours.
You did not fail your father in four minutes. You never could. Scripture names how a person keeps going and the answer at the far end is identical to the answer at the near end, and it is the Holy Spirit, not your architecture, who holds anybody. Set it down here at this table. It is heavy and it has been on that blanket for a long time.
Now hear it, and notice the symmetry.
So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in Him.Colossians 2:6
Just as you received Him.
The way in is the way on. Whatever a person did at the beginning, which for most people is not sophisticated and takes about a sentence, is the same motion they make for the rest of it.
That is a striking thing to write to a church that was being handed elaborate additional material by people who were quite sure it was necessary, which is exactly the situation, and the reply is not a better structure. It is: keep doing the first thing.
Your father was not being asked, in that bed, to learn anything new. He was doing the first thing, and he wanted it named.
And that same thing is what you have. Right now, at fifty-one, in a room where he is not. That stands written, and His Spirit is the one who did the receiving in your father sixty years earlier, and He did not require a diagram then either.
Now let me be careful, because there is a ditch on this side and I have no intention of putting you in it.
Nothing here says the structure was worthless or that thirty years of work was a detour. It was not. That image about the house has helped people you can name, and your father was a builder and the picture was chosen for him with love, and Scripture is full of architecture when architecture is what is needed.
That is what furniture is. It is real, and it takes weight, and you made some of it yourself.
And nothing here is telling you that you should have known better in the moment. You could not have. A man does what he has practiced when he is holding pillows in a room where his father is dying.
The point is only that a hand and a house are different things, and Scripture answers the hand question with a hand answer, and His Spirit is the one who does the holding.
Here is the plain part, and I will say it as you would want it. He got it anyway.
Sixty years of receiving Him is what your father was doing on that blanket, and the four minutes did not interrupt it, and the question was not a sign that anything was missing. It was a man near the end doing exactly what Scripture says to do, and asking his son to say it out loud, and his son loved him enough to build him a house.
So here is the turn, and it takes four seconds and it is not an apology to a man who is not here.
Say the one thing out loud, in five words or fewer, on your own.
That is the whole of it. Not the short version of the structure, which is still the structure. Not the answer you wish you had given, which is a rehearsal for a conversation that is over. Not an explanation of why you gave what you gave, which is the house again with a different door.
Five words. Alone. His word says the way on is the way in, and His Spirit is the one who has been doing the holding since before either of you needed to name it.
You have it already, and your father had it. That is written, and His Spirit is the one who did the receiving in him sixty years before you were born, and neither of them ever needed the four minutes to be better.
I am not going to tell you what those minutes did or did not do in him. That belongs to God and He knows it and He works in His own way and in His own timing, and I will not put a promise in His mouth to settle a thing I cannot settle. What I can tell you is what is already yours, and what is already yours is an answer the size of a hand.
Say it. He was already holding.
Declare this over yourself
Say these sitting at your own table, out loud, and keep them short. Nothing here is a task and nothing here has to be earned; it is already yours in Christ, and it was true on that blanket while you were still talking. Scripture is what these lines stand on, His Spirit is the one who makes them live, and the outcome is His, answered in His own way and in His own timing.
- Four minutes, you were built with love for a builder and you were an answer to a different question. In the name of Jesus I set you down at this table, because I stand on Him, and everything else is furniture.
- Road that only runs one way after thirty years, you had my mouth in that room and you are not having the rest of my life. Scripture says just as you received Him, so continue in Him, and the way on is the same motion as the way in.
- Lord, my father was doing the first thing on that blanket and Your Spirit had been doing the holding for sixty years, and he only wanted it named. Five words are enough, and I am saying mine out loud at this table tonight.
