She found out about it because of a woman called Dawn who has done nothing wrong.
Dawn started coming in the spring. She is warm and she is capable and she volunteered for the Thursday thing within a month, which is unusual, and everybody likes her.
And Sharon, who has been in that building for thirty-one years, noticed that she was watching.
Not unkindly. She would be genuinely upset if you told her she was unkind about Dawn, and she is not. But she noticed herself waiting for certain things. Waiting to hear how Dawn talks about a particular subject. Noting that Dawn had used a phrase Sharon associates with somewhere else. Filing the fact that Dawn had said something about a practice that suggested she had come from a tradition that does it differently.
And in May, standing at the urn with her back to the room, Sharon caught herself doing it in real time and thought, with a clarity she did not enjoy, I am marking her.
Against what.
That is the question that took her most of the summer, because it turns out there is a list.
She has never written it down. Nobody in that church has ever asked her to sign anything, and if you told her that her tradition prides itself on having no creed she would say yes, correctly, and mean it.
But there is a list, and when she finally sat down in August and made herself put it on paper, it came to about fourteen items, and she is fifty-four and she cannot tell you when a single one of them went on.
Some of them are important. She would defend three or four of them warmly.
Some of them are preferences that hardened. Two of them are about how a person talks rather than what they believe. One of them, she realized halfway down the page, is not a belief at all, it is a thing her mother used to say about people.
And every new person who has walked through that door for thirty-one years has been quietly assessed against a document that does not exist, by a woman in a movement whose founding boast is that it does not have one.
And you may have your own fourteen. Yours may be shorter, and it may be sharper, and you may have found out about it the same way, standing at something with your back to the room.
The confession Scripture puts at the door is one sentence long
Take this off before we go a step further, because you have carried it for thirty-one years and it was never yours.
You are not a hypocrite for having a list. You never were. Scripture names what stands at the door and it is one sentence, and it is the Holy Spirit, not anybody's assessment, who does the letting in. Set it down here at the urn. It is heavy and it has been on your shoulder every time somebody new came through.
Now hear the sentence, and count what is in it.
If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.Romans 10:9
Two things. A mouth and a heart, and one Person named in both.
That is the door. It is written into a letter that spends chapters on difficult material, by a man entirely capable of a longer list, to a church with real divisions in it about real practices, and when he gets to what actually stands at the entrance he gives them a sentence a person can say in a doorway.
Not fourteen items. Not four. One Person, confessed and believed.
You came in through that door yourself. Thirty-one years ago, and it has held ever since. That stands written, and His Spirit is the one who made it true in you, and He has never once run an additional assessment at the urn.
Now let me be careful, because there is a ditch on this side and I have no intention of putting you in it.
Nothing here says the fourteen items are all rubbish or that having convictions is a character flaw. Three or four of them you would defend warmly and you would be right to. There is real substance on that page and some of it was worked out at cost by people you loved, and a church that holds nothing is not generous, it is just empty.
That is what furniture is. It is real and it takes weight and your mother chose one piece of it.
And nothing here is telling you to go and throw the list away, or to stop noticing things, or to pretend that how somebody speaks tells you nothing. It sometimes tells you something.
The point is only that the list is not the door, and for thirty-one years it has been standing where the door is, and Scripture puts one sentence there instead. His Spirit is the one who does the admitting and He has never delegated it.
Here is the tender part, and Scripture is gentle with it. What you found at the urn in May was not cruelty.
It was a woman who loves that room trying to keep it safe, using the only instrument she had, which was a list nobody gave her and nobody could correct because nobody knew it was there. His Spirit is not shocked by it, and He is the one who has been letting people in past it for three decades anyway.
So here is the turn, and it takes four seconds and it is not about Dawn.
Say the one thing out loud, in five words or fewer, on your own.
That is the whole of it. Not an apology to anybody. Not a decision about the fourteen items, which you can look at another day and some of which you will keep. Not a resolution to be warmer at the urn, which is a fifteenth item with a kind face on it.
Five words. Alone. His word puts one sentence at the door and His Spirit is the one who admits people through it.
And say them as somebody who came in that way. Because you did, thirty-one years ago, and no part of the list was consulted about you either.
You are in through that door already, and nothing at the urn has ever changed it. That stands written, and His Spirit is the one who did it, and neither of them has ever waited for anybody's assessment.
I am not going to tell you what happens with Dawn or what the summer does to the fourteen items. That belongs to God and He works in His own way and in His own timing, and I will not put a promise in His mouth to make this page finish neatly. What I can tell you is what is already yours, and what is already yours is a door with one sentence at it.
Say the sentence you came in on.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing on your own, out loud, and keep them short. Nothing here is a task and nothing here has to be earned; it is already yours in Christ, and it was settled the day you came in. Scripture is what these lines stand on, His Spirit is the one who makes them live, and the outcome is His, answered in His own way and in His own timing.
- Fourteen items, nobody handed you to me and nobody can correct you, and you have been standing where the door is. In the name of Jesus I move you off it, because I stand on Him, and everything else is furniture.
- Four seconds at the top of the steps, you were a woman trying to keep a room safe with the only instrument she had, and you are not the key. Scripture says confess with the mouth and believe in the heart, and that is one sentence a person can say in a doorway.
- Lord, You are the door and Your Spirit is the one who let me through it thirty-one years ago without consulting a thing. Five words are enough, and I am saying the ones I came in on out loud today.
