The app is excellent. Marcus wants that said first, because he is not about to run down a thing that has been good to him.
You read the chapter, and at the end of it a man comes on and talks for about five minutes about what you have just read. He is warm, he is careful, he is not selling anything, and Marcus has learned a great deal from him over three years and could not honestly tell you how much.
The streak is at nine hundred and sixty-one days.
And two Saturdays ago the signal went, out at his brother's place, and Marcus read the chapter and got to the end of it, and the screen said it could not load, and he sat in a kitchen chair with the book in his hand and did not know what to do next.
Not annoyed. He genuinely did not know what came next.
He sat there about forty seconds and then he got up and put the kettle on.
He is thirty-six and he has been reading every day for three years and it took a dropped signal to show him that in nine hundred and sixty-one days he has never once finished a chapter and stayed in the room with it.
There has always been a voice.
And this is the part he has not told anybody, including his brother, who was standing right there. He does not think he could stay in the room with it. He thinks about forty seconds is roughly his limit, and after that he would want somebody to tell him what it meant, and he does not know when that started, and he suspects it started the day he installed it, and he does not want to think that because the app has been good to him.
He has read, by his own count, something over eleven hundred chapters.
He could not tell you what any of them did to him. He could tell you what the man said about a great many of them.
And you may have a voice attached to yours. And you may not have noticed, because it has been kind and it has been right and it has never once let you down.
The Psalm says what happens at the point of entry
Take this off before we go a step further, because you have carried it three years and it was never yours.
You are not incapable of receiving it. You never were. Scripture says what happens the moment its own words go in, and who it happens to, and it is the Holy Spirit, not a five minute explanation, who does the giving of light. Set it down here on this step. It is heavy and it has nine hundred and sixty-one days on it.
Now hear it, and hear how the sentence is built.

The unfolding of your words gives light.
The light is attributed to the words unfolding. Not to the explanation of the words, which the psalm could easily have said and does not, and this is a psalm that talks about almost nothing except the word for one hundred and seventy-six verses.
And then the second half aims it: to the simple. The uninstructed. The person with no equipment. That is who the giving is pointed at, deliberately, and it is the only qualification named.
You are given light at the point the words go in. That stands written, and His Spirit is the one who unfolds them, and He has never once required a second voice in the room to do it.
Now let me be careful here, because there is a ditch on this side and I have no intention of putting you in it.
Nothing here says delete the app. Do not delete it. That man has taught you real things for three years and he is careful and he is not selling anything, and God has used teachers since there were any and Scripture is full of them by name.
And nothing here says a plain reading is always the right one. It is not. Some passages need somebody who has done the work, and a reader who refuses all help is not brave, and the ditch on that side has swallowed people.
The point is only about the silence you have never had, and Scripture says the unfolding itself gives light to the simple, and His Spirit is the one who does that in the forty seconds you have been getting up out of.
Here is the tender part, and Scripture is gentle with it. You could tell me what the man said about eleven hundred chapters.
You could not tell me what any of them did to you, and the reason is not that nothing did. It is that nothing was ever given the room. His Spirit was in every one of those mornings and He has never once been in a hurry.
So here is the turn, and it takes one chapter and no headphones.
Read one passage with no commentary open beside it. Then stop at the end of the passage.
That is the whole of it. Not a verdict on three good years. Not a streak broken on purpose, which is not what this is and which would be a strange thing to make it about.
One chapter, and then stay in the chair past the forty seconds.
Light is given at the unfolding, and it is given to the simple. That stands written, and His Spirit is the one who unfolds it, and neither of them has ever needed a second voice.
I am not going to tell you what arrives in that silence or when. That belongs to God and He works in His own way and in His own timing, and I will not put a promise in His mouth so this page can end well. What I can tell you is what is already yours, and what is already yours is a psalm that puts the light at the point the words go in.
Read your chapter. Then let the room stay quiet.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing on your own, out loud, in ordinary words. Nothing here is a task and nothing here has to be earned; it is already yours in Christ, and it was yours through all nine hundred and sixty-one days. Scripture is what these lines stand on, His Spirit is the one who makes them live, and the outcome is His, answered in His own way and in His own timing.
- Five minutes of a good man explaining, you have taught me real things for three years and you are not the light and you never claimed to be. In the name of Jesus I set you down on this step, because I can read this as it reads, and it was written to be understood and I am allowed to take it plainly.
- Suspicion that forty seconds is my limit, you were formed by a habit and never once by Scripture. The psalm says the unfolding of His words gives light, and it aims that light at the simple, which is the only qualification it names.
- Lord, You unfold Your own words and Your Spirit is the one who gives the understanding. You have never been in a hurry and You have never needed a second voice, and I am staying in this chair past the forty seconds.
