They Made My Verse Mean Something Small

This message is for the verse that carried you through the worst year of your life, and the sermon that explained it as a piece of administration, after which you could not hear it the same way again

She had it on a card in the van for four years.

Not a nice card. A bit of an old birthday card with the picture torn off, and she wrote it out herself in biro, and it was propped in the slot in the door where you would put a map.

Delphine drove that van through the worst four years anybody in her family has had, to work and back and to the hospital and back, and there were mornings the only reason the key went in was that card.

She could not tell you why that verse. It is not a famous one. It was in something somebody gave her at the door of a church she was only in once.

Then, in October, at a different church, a man preached on the passage it comes from.

He was good. She wants that said. He was thorough and he was not showing off and he clearly loved the text.

And what he showed the room, carefully, over about thirty-five minutes, is that the phrase belongs to a specific arrangement between a group of people and a man who had written to them, and that it concerns a practical matter, and that reading it as a general encouragement is a mistake people commonly make.

Delphine sat there with her hands in her lap.

She has not put the card back in the van.

It is in a drawer in the kitchen and she has taken it out twice and put it back both times, and it is now nine months.

She is fifty-seven.

And she has not said this to anyone, because it sounds like she is arguing with a good man about a passage she cannot read in the original and has no standing in: whatever that phrase was doing to me at half past five in the morning for four years, it was not nothing, and it was not a mistake, and I would like somebody to tell me what it was.

And you may have a card like that. In a drawer, since somebody explained it.

Paul says what the word is doing while a person holds it

Take this off before we go a step further, because you have carried it nine months and it was never yours.

You were not making it up. You never were. Scripture describes what happens when a person receives its words as what they are, and it says those words are at work in that person, in the present tense, and it is the Holy Spirit, not a correct application, who does that work. Set it down here in this doorway. It is heavy and it has been in a kitchen drawer since October.

Now hear it, and hear the last three words.

And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.1 Thessalonians 2:13

At work in you who believe.

That is a present participle. It is not describing something the word did once when it was correctly understood. It is describing an ongoing operation inside a person, running while they hold it.

And notice what the sentence makes the difference: they accepted it as what it actually is. Not as a human word. That is the whole condition named, and it is a condition about how a thing is received rather than how precisely it has been placed.

Something was at work in that van. That stands written, and His Spirit is the one who does the working, and He has never once suspended it pending a better reading.

Now let me be careful here, because there is a deep ditch on this side and I have no intention of putting you in it.

Nothing here says the man was wrong. He may well have been exactly right about what that phrase is doing in that letter, and knowing that is worth having, and Scripture praises people who handle the text carefully and it warns about people who do not.

And nothing here says a verse means whatever it does to you. It does not. That road ends somewhere ugly and people have been badly hurt on it, and the man in that pulpit was standing between his people and that road, which is his job.

The point is narrower, and Scripture says the word is at work in the one who receives it, and His Spirit is the one who was at half past five in the morning in a van, doing something real with words that were genuinely His however narrowly they were first addressed.

Here is the tender part, and Scripture is gentle with it. You have not lost the four years.

Whatever the phrase meant in its letter, God is not obliged to hold His comfort inside a footnote, and He does not withdraw retrospectively what He did for a woman driving to a hospital. His Spirit was in that van and He has never once taken back what He gave there.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it takes one passage and nobody explaining anything.

Read one passage with no commentary open beside it. Then stop at the end of the passage.

Read the one from the card, if you can face it. The whole paragraph it sits in, not just the line.

That is the whole of it. Not an argument with the man, which you would not win and which is not the trouble. Not a decision to ignore what he said, which is not available to you now and which would be a smaller life.

One passage. And then the card back in the van.

The word is at work in the one who receives it, in the present tense. That stands written, and His Spirit is the one at work, and neither of them ever paused it for a correction.

I am not going to tell you the verse will do again what it did at half past five in the morning. That belongs to God and He works in His own way and in His own timing, and I will not put a promise in His mouth so this page can end well. What I can tell you is what is already yours, and what is already yours is four years that God does not take back.

Read your passage. Then put the card where it goes.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing on your own, out loud, in ordinary words. Nothing here is a task and nothing here has to be earned; it is already yours in Christ, and it was yours through all four of those years. Scripture is what these lines stand on, His Spirit is the one who makes them live, and the outcome is His, answered in His own way and in His own timing.

  1. Card in the kitchen drawer since October, you were four years of getting the key in at half past five and you are not a mistake. In the name of Jesus I set you down in this doorway, because I can read this as it reads, and it was written to be understood and I am allowed to take it plainly.
  2. Feeling that a good man took something off me for thirty-five minutes, you were never once measured against the verse. It says the word of God is at work in you who believe, in the present tense, running while a person holds it.
  3. Lord, You were in that van at half past five for four years and Your Spirit is the one who did the working. You have never taken back retrospectively what You gave a woman driving to a hospital, and the card goes back today.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
