She did it at eleven at night on a Tuesday and it took about four seconds.
Eleven years. Kate started that group when her mother was first ill, because somebody had to tell everybody everything and she was the one who could type. It ran through the illness and then through the funeral and then, because groups do, it just kept running.
And she kept it running.
That is the part nobody would guess. It looked like a family staying in touch. What it actually was, for about eight of those eleven years, was one woman doing an enormous amount of quiet work: rephrasing things, letting a comment go past without responding so that nobody else responded either, asking somebody a question in private so that they did not ask it in public, remembering which two people were not speaking that month and making sure neither of them was mentioned to the other.
Eight years of that. Every day, in the background, like breathing.
And in March, after something that was not even the worst thing that had ever happened in there, she pressed the button.
Nobody has mentioned it.
Not once, in five months. She has seen four of them since. Two of them rang her about other things and were perfectly warm.
Nobody has said, you left.
And that is what has been sitting on her, and it is not self-pity. It is something more disorienting than that. Eight years of invisible work, and the proof that it was invisible is that its absence is invisible too.
She is forty-six.
She would tell you she has stopped wanting it, and she would be lying, and she knows she would be lying because of what happens in her when somebody mentions a cousin.
And you may know that button. Yours may have been a phone you stopped picking up or a table you stopped setting, and the quiet afterward may have been the loudest part.
Nobody is asked to make it, only to keep it
Take this off before we go any further, because you have carried it for eight years and it was never yours.
You were not the one holding that family together. You never were. Scripture is precise about what a person is asked to do here and it is not manufacture, and it is the Holy Spirit, not your management, who makes any unity there is. Set it down here on the table. It is heavy and it has been on you since a Tuesday in March.
Now hear the sentence, and look hard at the verb.
Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.Ephesians 4:3
Keep.
Not make. Not build, not construct, not generate out of nothing on a Tuesday night by rephrasing somebody's message before anybody else reads it.
Keep, which is what you do with a thing that already exists.
And whose is it? The unity of the Spirit. It is not yours. It never was on your account and it was never yours to produce, which means eight years of producing it was eight years of doing a job that had not been given to you.
The effort is real. Make every effort is not a soft phrase and it is in that sentence on purpose. But the effort goes into keeping something He made, and you have been trying to make something He keeps.
That is written, and His Spirit is the one who holds any of it together, and He was doing it in all eleven years including the eight you thought were down to you.
Now let me be careful, because there is a ditch on this side and I have no intention of putting you in it.
Nothing here says the eight years were pointless or that the rephrasing was manipulation. It was not. It was a woman who could type doing the only thing available to her, and some of those conversations did not happen because of you and were better for not happening, and God is not scornful about any of it.
And nothing here is telling you that you should not have left, or that you should go back, or that pressing that button was a failure of love. It may have been the most honest thing you did all year.
The point is only about whose job it was, and Scripture assigns it to the Spirit and gives you the keeping, and His Spirit is the one who has never once handed anybody the making.
Here is the tender part. The silence since March is not a verdict on the eight years.
It is what invisible work sounds like when it stops. Nobody thanked you while you were doing it because nobody could see it, and nobody has missed it for exactly the same reason, and that is a description of the work rather than of your family, and His word never once made notice the measure of anything. His Spirit saw every one of those evenings.
So here is the turn, and it is one person and it is not a group.
Contact one person you have stopped contacting. His word gives you the keeping and His Spirit does the rest of it.
That is the whole of it. Not a return to the group. Not a rebuilding of anything, which was never yours to build. One person, one message, about nothing much.
And hear this clearly, because it matters more than the rest: if contacting that person would not be safe for you, do not. Choose somebody else, or say their name to God and leave it there. Nothing on this page is worth walking into harm for, and God is not asking you to.
You are able to keep something today. Not make it. His word gives you the keeping of a unity that is His Spirit's, and His Spirit is the one who has been making it all along, and neither of them ever put the whole family on one woman with a phone.
I am not going to tell you what comes back or whether anybody replies. That belongs to God and He works in His own way and in His own timing, and I will not put a promise in His mouth so this page can end well. What I can tell you is what is already yours, and what is already yours is a smaller job than the one you have been doing.
One person. Not eleven years of them.
Declare this over yourself
Say these standing in your own kitchen, out loud. Nothing here is a task and nothing here has to be earned; it is already yours in Christ, and it was true through all eleven years. Scripture is what these lines stand on, His Spirit is the one who makes them live, and the outcome is His, answered in His own way and in His own timing.
- Eight years of invisible work, you were real and you were kind and you were never my job. In the name of Jesus I set you down on this table, because unity was the whole point and I still want it, and wanting it has cost me and I am not giving it up.
- Silence since March, you are what invisible work sounds like when it stops, and you are not a verdict on anybody. Scripture says keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace, and keep is what a person does with a thing that already exists.
- Lord, it is the unity of Your Spirit and Your Spirit is the one who has been making it for eleven years including the eight I thought were mine. The keeping is my size, and I am contacting one person this week.
